Description
Tea bricks, which for centuries were transported by horse and camel up and down the ancient spice routes that stretched from China to Europe, really came into their own as a dependable token of trade in 1861. In that year, Russian businessmen looking to bolster their domestic tea market, established three fully mechanized tea brick factories in China's Hubei Province. (The home of the Suva Tea Brick.) The new factories, built in the towns of Puqi Yang, Lou Dong and Chong yang, used a process characterized by a spiral-compressing machine that was operated by hand. They found the system worked incredibly well, helping solve a number of issues that had plagued tea bricks for years - crumbling corners, and uneven thickness.
Not long after the first factories were established however, fierce competition from British tea traders saw the Russians consolidate their three factories into one in 1874. The new factory, named "Shun Feng" was built in Hankou and was the first in the world to feature a completely mechanized production floor. The new process used steam and water compressing machines to make the bricks, a development that made it possible to make both black, and green bricks. (Traditionally, only black bricks were produced). Interestingly, the factory was also one of the first Sino-European joint ventures, and the first enterprise in the city of Hankou, to be funded by a foreign country.
According to historical records, the factory was extremely busy by the standards of the day, turning out 80 baskets of 64 bricks daily. While most tea bricks were broken apart and boiled, a few examples of Hubei's early output turn up from time to time at auctions, or dusty museum storage rooms throughout the world. We're pleased to help keep the tradition alive with othis stunning example of a traditional Hubei brick, crafted from 100% pure Chinese green tea in the same steam process used back in the 19th century. Epic Iced Tea Instructions
Tea isn't just served hot! Iced tea is one of the most refreshing and natural thirst quenchers around the world. Here is our suggested method of brewing the best iced tea.
ICED TEA BREWING METHOD (Pitcher): (To Make 1 Liter/Quart):
- Place 6 slightly heaping teaspoons of loose tea or 6 tea bags into a teapot or heat resistant pitcher.
- Using filtered or freshly drawn cold water, boil and pour 1¼ cups/315ml over the tea.
- Steep for 5 minutes.
- Quarter fill a serving pitcher with cold water.
- Pour the tea into your serving pitcher straining the tea or removing the bags.
- Add ice and top-up the pitcher with cold water. Garnish and sweeten to taste.
- A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced tea is to increase
- the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted with cold water.
Note: Some luxury quality teas may turn cloudy when poured over ice. This is a sign of luxury quality and nothing to worry about.

- Place 1 slightly heaping teaspoon of loose tea or 1 tea bag into a teapot for each serving required.
- Using filtered or freshly drawn cold water, boil and pour 6-7oz/170-200ml per serving over the tea.
- Cover and let steep for 5 minutes.
- Add hot tea to a 12oz/375ml acrylic glass filled with ice, straining the tea or removing the bags.
- Not all of the tea will fit, allowing for approximately an additional ½ serving.
- A rule of thumb when preparing fresh brewed iced tea is to increase the strength of hot tea since it will be poured over ice and diluted.
Note: Some luxury quality teas may turn cloudy when poured over ice. This is a sign of luxury quality and nothing to worry about.
